Course summary:

This course invites participants to rethink mosque architecture by exploring the continuous shifts in its references, from its earliest form, the Mosque of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to modern and postmodern reinterpretations. It begins with a foundational study grounded in jurisprudential perspectives, examining the roots of the mosque and early examples such as the Dome of the Rock. Building on this foundation, participants will then critically explore the historical forces that have shaped mosque design, with particular focus on the transformative impact of colonial and postcolonial contexts. The course will investigate major moments in mosque history, key institutions, and influential figures, including Le Corbusier, that continue to shape how mosques are represented and perceived today. By tracing these transformations, participants will be encouraged to reflect critically on how Muslims might understand and engage with these shifts in contemporary architectural practice.
