The region had seen the emergence of the Seljuks and Mamluks, the Crusades, and the devastating Mongol invasions that destroyed much of the Muslim power structures. Constantinople was still under the authority of the Eastern Roman Empire, and the Balkans, known as Rumeli in Ottoman, was predominantly a configuration of Christian states constantly competing. It was in this environment that the Ottomans emerged. First, as a small beylic, the Ottomans swiftly expanded west into the Balkans, then eastwards towards Anatolia, before being defeated by Tamerlane at the Battle of Ankara. After Timur’s death, the Ottomans emerged again, this time stronger, and managed to capture the ‘Red Apple’ – Constantinople to be also named as Istanbul. Under Selim I, they would emerge as a Caliphate and be known in history as one of the most powerful Empires in the World. This course shall chart how these transitions occurred in the Ottoman Empire. We shall examine the emergence of Ottoman political authority and how the Devsirme and, subsequently, the Janissary Corps emerge. We shall examine the notion of state fratricide and slavery and the emergence of a new legal system known as the Kanun. The course will also expose the student to the current debates in the field of Ottoman studies, but also challenges a host of tropes and notions. The idea of the course is to educate Muslims on how Ottoman History is part of their Islamic past. This 8-week course shall be two hours a week online, with reading material and two essays shall be given. This course is part of a three-part course that will chart the whole Ottoman Empire's history.

The Emergence of the Ottoman Empire

Sundays 10 AM - 12 PM EST

Week 1

October 8

Why Study History – Ottoman History Islamic?

Week 2

October 15

Background: The region before the Ottomans, Seljuks, Mamluks, Mongols, Byzantines and Turkic Beyliks.

Week 3

October 22

Early Ottomans, the mythology of Ertugrul, Osman’s Dream, and Orhan and the establishment of the Ottomans.

Week 4

October 29

Examination of the Gazi thesis, Murat Hudavandigar and expansion into the Balkans. The enigmatic Sultan was in power for 33 years, making him one of the longest-ruling Sultans in Ottoman history. The Sultan is known for re-emphasising the state's policies on Islam, safeguarding the border areas of the Ottoman Empire and projecting the idea of the Caliphate internally and globally. During the Sultan’s reign, the notion of constitutionalism came to fruition, leading discussions on modern Islamic governance, and the emergence of a host of intellectual ideas from Western Europe came to the fore. Sultan Abdulhamid II came to power in somewhat controversial circumstances and was removed from power for an even more controversial reason – via revolution. There is still much to learn about the Sultan and his period. This course will examine all the critical areas of Sultan Abdulhamid II and his reign, attempting to answer just some of the key questions mentioned above.

Course schedule:

<table style="width: 100.061%; We shall see how the children of Sulayman al-Kanuni attempted to safeguard the Empire, mainly how the last form of fratricide was undertaken and the reason for the end of this practice. While the Sultan would usually be trained outside of the Imperial centre, from this moment, Sultans and their siblings were kept inside the palace as a series of young Sultans came to the fore. However, no sooner had the culture of fratricide ended and the Janissary committed the first Ottoman regicide against Osman II. After a series of defeats, the European states would be at war with each other, while the Ottomans would go through a cultural renascence known as the Tulip Age. The reign of Abdulhamid I, would see the loss of Muslim territory in the Khanate of Crimea for the first time, which forced the Ottomans to re-think the need for state transformation and centralization under Selim III.

The course will examine key topics regarding fratricide, regicide, the power of the Janissary and the evolution of the Ottoman Caliphate and legal system. This reform period is famously known as the Tanzimat period. After the Tanzimat period, we see the arrival of the ‘pious sultan’ Abdulhamid II. Abdulhamid’s reign was the longest in two centuries, and he was in power for 33 years. He emphasised the idea of the Ottoman Caliphate, a policy deemed “Pan-Islamic” by the Western European powers. The Sultan’s reign ended due to the Constitutional Revolution enacted by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) in 1908, which demanded the return of the Ottoman constitutional experiment first attempted in 1876. No sooner did the CUP come to power that the Italians invaded Libya in 1911, and the Balkan wars between 1912-13, paved the way for WWI in 1914. By 1918, the Empire had collapsed and lost the Balkan and Arab provinces. However, this led to the Turkish War of Independence, which was then followed by the abolishment of the institution of the Ottoman Caliphate and the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1922-1924.

This 8-week course shall be two hours a week online, with reading material and two essays shall be given. What was the sociological structure of the early caliphate outside Arabia? How did the companions strive to preserve Islam intellectually and politically? This course examines the life, work, and geopolitical legacy of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (al-Khulafā’ al-Rāshidūn) (CE 632-661). Starting from succession to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), this course critically examines the Islamic conquests (futūhāt), the legal and political makeup of the early Caliphate, preservation of the Qur’an, and lastly, civil strife that afflicted the Ummah in its first generation.
This course delves into history beyond the spectacular personalities of the Caliphs, taking students across a complex landscape of military struggle, economic policies, natural disasters, and most importantly, the strong leadership that would define the next millennium of global history.
In a time marked by lack of appreciation for Islamic history – and subsequently of few dedicated courses – the Ummah’s collective imagination is largely indebted to orientalists whose narratives make up the lion’s share of media and education curricula. In employing a multi-faceted critical historical approach – utilizing Islamic sources and critically assessing orientalist works – this course provides an intellectual edifice for students to understand history through Islamic historiography and epistemology.

Student Learning Outcomes:

This course aims to equip learners with the following objectives:

1. Understanding the role of history (tārīkh) in the Islamic sciences, such as jurisprudence and tafsir (exegesis), and gaining knowledge of primary Islamic historical texts
2. Understand major orientalist narratives and their epistemology, and be able to critique them from an Islamic perspective based on Islamic epistemology
3. Explain the features of Islamic civilization catapulted by the caliphs in the following fields:
(a) establishment and preservation of Islam;
(b) the military and political makeup of the Caliphate;
(c) development of Islamic sciences; and
(d) its legal system and sociological achievements (e.g., jizyah system, removal of poverty)
4. Extract principles implemented by the caliphs to find solutions for the Ummah’s problems today
5. Develop your Iman through firm knowledge of the Islamic historical tradition and the deep epistemologies and historical content of the first century of Islam

Attendance & Participation:

While this is an online course, students are expected to attend all the lectures and complete any set essays for the course. The partition set off a new historical course for the Middle East that saw several regional political reconfigurations and wars, ending with the 2023-2024 genocide in Gaza. Focusing on the internal ideological trajectory of Zionism from its inception can, however, help answer important historical questions as to why and how this settler colonial ideology born out of 19th-century European nationalist thought was planted in Palestine. Some of these questions deal with the initial objectives of Zionist immigration to Palestine, the relationship between Judaism and Zionism, and the conception of Zionist thinkers of Arab Palestinians.

This course provides an introductory historical overview of Zionism as the founding ideology of Israel. It covers historical themes and subjects that help explain the ideological trajectory of Zionism; how it originated as an ideology of national liberation within a European-dominated thought system, then to a socialist settler colonial project, and finally to a full-fledged ethno-nationalist apartheid state. The focus of the course will less be on the history of Palestine, though its covered subjects will help put in context how Ottoman Palestine was disintegrated, partitioned, and finally colonized. Rather, its aim is to help students build a solid historical knowledge of entangled themes in imperial, Jewish, world, and Arab-Middle Eastern history that hopefully deepens and nuances their understanding of Zionism and Israel. At a closer look, the history of Zionism represents a significant historical phenomenon in world history as the crossroad between 19th-century European nationalist thought, the secularization of Judaic identity and Jewish civilization, and settler colonialism as a model of nation-building in the post-Ottoman Muslim-Arab world.

Course Requirements:

Historiographical readings as well as translated primary sources will be assigned each week to prepare for the weekly lectures. It begins with a foundational study grounded in jurisprudential perspectives, examining the roots of the mosque and early examples such as the Dome of the Rock. Building on this foundation, participants will then critically explore the historical forces that have shaped mosque design, with particular focus on the transformative impact of colonial and postcolonial contexts. The course will investigate major moments in mosque history, key institutions, and influential figures, including Le Corbusier, that continue to shape how mosques are represented and perceived today. By tracing these transformations, participants will be encouraged to reflect critically on how Muslims might understand and engage with these shifts in contemporary architectural practice.

Course schedule:

<table style="width: 100.061%; We shall examine themes like conquest, expansion, interregnum, fratricide, and early Ottoman political theory. This course is designed for both beginners and students who have knowledge of the subject.

Course schedule:

<table style="width: 100.061%; Responding to the Ottoman Caliphate's collapse and Western hegemony, modern Muslim intellectuals engaged classical concepts of sovereignty (Imamah), political order (Nizam), and statecraft (Siyasa) to reconcile Islamic governance with modernity. The course challenges the reduction of Ittihad-i Islam to "Pan-Islamism," revealing it as a sophisticated project reinterpreting foundational texts (al-Mawardi, al-Juwayni, Ibn Khaldun) to address freedom, representation, and international relations. We contrast this with the subsequent "long interregnum" of secular nationalism and Cold War Islamism, whose failures (post-2011 Arab Uprisings, Gaza 2023) underscore the urgent need to recover classical paradigms. Through primary sources and critical political theology, students will reconstruct core Sunni foundations of classical political theory: Jahiliya (political anarchy), Dairah al-Adl (circle of justice), Asabiyya (elite solidarity), and cyclical state dynamics. The goal is to reignite Sunni political ethics capable of informing a civilizational pole in today’s multipolar world, moving beyond reactionary ideologies toward a realist tradition grounded in prophetic state-building and balanced governance.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Master core concepts of classical Sunni political thought (Imamah, Siyasa, Jahiliya, Nizam).

Reconstruct Sunni theories of sovereignty, constitutionalism, state formation/collapse.

Develop fluency in comparing Sunni political theology with Western realism (Hobbes, Schmitt).

Evaluate the relevance of classical paradigms for contemporary Muslim political revival.

Required Texts (Selection):

Course Reader: Key excerpts will be provided before class from al-Juwayni (Ghiyāth al-Umam), al-Mawardi (al-Ahkam al-Sultaniyya), Ibn Khaldun (Muqaddimah), Ibn al-Azraq (Bada’i al-Silk), Shah Waliullah (Hujjatullah al-Baligha), al-Turtushi (Siraj al-Muluk) & Secondary Source material

Course schedule:

Advanced Muslim Political Thought and Realism for a Multi-Civilisational World

Saturdays 10 AM - 12 PM EST (United States Eastern Standard Time)

Week 1

November 15

The Muslim Political Reborn - Sunni Realism against the Forces of Gnosticism and Populism
Analyze the Concept of Siyāsah/ʿIlm al-Madīna vs. Greek Politeia/Polis ?
Establishing Sunni Realism: Against Nihilism, Gnostic Utopianism and Populism
Sunni centrism as antidote to political extremism
Thinking like a Muslim: Rejecting Left/Right Dichotomies.
Political Cycles as Cosmic Law: Introducing the Khaldūnian frame
Turchin’s secular cycles.

Week 2

November 22

The State of Nature in Islam
Anarchy (Jāhiliya) as State of Nature. Drawing directly on the themes, arguments, and historical case studies of the book, the course offers students a structured entry point into the intellectual, political, and religious debates that shaped the late Ottoman Empire.
The course examines the evolving role of Islam in Ottoman governance during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with particular attention to how the ulema understood their responsibilities amid imperial crisis, reform, and revolutionary change. Central to this inquiry is the question of constitutionalism: how Ottoman scholars reconciled Islamic legal and political traditions with emerging constitutional frameworks, parliamentary institutions, and concepts of popular sovereignty.
Key themes explored include competing notions of reform (iṣlāḥ and tajdīd), the legitimacy of political authority, and the boundaries between obedience (ṭāʿa) and disobedience (khurūj or opposition) to the ruler. Students will engage with debates surrounding revolutionary activism, resistance, and loyalty, as well as the moral and legal arguments advanced by the ulema in response to both internal reform movements and external pressures.
In addition, the course investigates the intellectual foundations of parliamentary thought in the Ottoman context, situating these discussions within broader Islamic political theory and late-imperial global currents. By tracing these debates, the course highlights the centrality of the ulema not as passive traditionalists, but as active participants in shaping visions of Islamic constitutional order.
Overall, the course charts the major arguments and thematic trajectories of Dr Ahmed’s book prior to its publication, offering students early engagement with cutting-edge scholarship on Ottoman history, Islamic political thought, and the intersection of revolution and revelation.

Course schedule:

<table style="width: 100.061%; We draw on postcolonial and critical readings, always asking where these concepts sit in relation to the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and what Muslim scholars and thinkers have said in response.

The goal is to help students think more clearly about the world they actually live in - and to begin imagining what a more grounded way of engaging with it might look like.

Course objectives:

By the end of the course:

• You will have a solid grasp of the core concepts of modernity and how they developed in the Western context.
• You will be able to critique these concepts by situating them historically and exposing the assumptions they carry.
• You will be familiar with how mainstream Islamic scholars and thinkers have engaged with and responded to these ideas.
• You will have begun developing your own framework for thinking about modernity from an Islamic perspective.

Course schedule:

<table style="width: 100.061%;
